We are studying modern history this term we have included Animal Farm as part of our communism education. We suggest this is read to your child as a read aloud and that you discuss the issues raised. We do give you a brief guide to reading this novel. This is often used in high school but the concepts can be understood in Year 6. Since it is an animal story younger children will just see it as that.
Each term our novels look at other regimes including: Nazism during WWII, Apartheid in South Africa, and Taliban rule in Afghanistan. These stories are written for children and discuss the issues without being too distressing for primary children. We also cover Asian immigration to Australia after the Vietnam war.
