The New Zealand sea lion is an New Zealand sea lion that mostly breeds on New Zealand's subantarctic islands, but has been quietly reproducing and recolonizing the coasts of New Zealand's South and Stewart islands in recent years. The New Zealand sea lion is one of the world's rarest sea lion species, with a population of roughly 12,000 individuals.
